Recorded in 1965 and released by Tico Records, the album brings together an all-star ensemble featuring some of the most influential musicians in Latin jazz, mambo, and the emerging New York Latin sound. The performance is built around the Cuban descarga tradition—extended jam sessions emphasizing improvisation, percussion, brass, and rhythmic interplay.

Tracklist

Side One

Guajira Controversial

Side Two

Cargas y Descargas

Barroquinho

The original Volume 1 contains three extended performances, with “Guajira Controversial” occupying the entire first side.

Details

Artist: Tico All-Stars
Album: Descargas at the Village Gate, Live
Year: 1965
Label: Tico Records
Catalog: Tico LP-1135
Format: 12" Stereo Vinyl LP
Genre: Latin / Latin Jazz / Mambo / Salsa
Style: Descarga / Afro-Cuban Jazz / Latin Dance
Recorded: Live at the Village Gate, New York City, 1965
Producer: Pancho Cristal
Total Tracks: 3
Notable Musicians: Tito Puente – percussion, timbales, vibraphone; Ray Barretto – congas and percussion; Cachao – bass; Charlie Palmieri – piano; Eddie Palmieri – piano; Johnny Pacheco – flute; Cándido Camero – congas; Chocolate Armenteros – trumpet; Barry Rogers – trombone; Jimmy Sabater – timbales; Santos Colón and other guest vocalists.

Special Feature: This recording is part of the historic three-volume Descargas at the Village Gate series, documenting an extraordinary live gathering of Tico All-Stars at New York City's legendary Village Gate.
